Last night I ran into a number of good old friends, many of whom used to be sXe, I noticed that some made a point of saying that it seemed weird to them now that a time of thier life was spent like that. It surprises me because i'd imagine for the most part its was a positive and radical thing to be during a period of their involvement with HC/punk, not to mention, based on my experience of the early 00's CT scene, an exciting time where sXe was a big factor in the strength of the scene and how proactive it was. Its possible that a lot of this depends of peoples resons for becoming sXe in first place, it means different thinsg to different people for different reasons.
i think you get that with kids who liked hardcore in general. i find it weird that something that people put so much time and effort into can then be dismissed as something to 'grow out of'. it's a bit more than that to me which is why i always find those kinds of attitudes insulting. sure, opinions might change, but that doesnt mean you need to insult something that means something to loads of people, and probably meant a lot to you when you were a bit younger.
i think with the drinking though the people who break usually feel the need to announce it to the world, hence why they act like obnoxious dickheads after a couple of pints, or post it on their facebook status as though they are somehow remarkable for getting drunk.
for me, i like drinking and stuff so sxe isn't something i'd do, but i respect that it can be a positive way to live and help out pepole, and plenty of my best friends are edge. i'd never feel the need to insult it or detract from it, regardless of whether it is something i think fits into my life.
